Wireless Estimator

Wireless Estimator:

"Spurred by environmental groups, the FCC said that it has tentatively concluded that tower owners should use medium intensity white strobe lights as the preferred lighting over red obstruction lighting systems for each new or altered registered antenna structure (See: WT Docket No 03-187 ), but it is looking for additional information before enacting that regulation.
The Federal agency believes that there is supporting data available to warrant the change to protect migratory birds from communications towers."

Amateur radio operators to do emergency test in Va., N.C. - Roanoke.com

Amateur radio operators to do emergency test in Va., N.C. - Roanoke.com:

"Amateur radio operators to do emergency test in Va., N.C.
Activities will include a simulated snowstorm and some lost mountain hikers.
By Paul Dellinger
(276) 228-4752

Up to 100 amateur radio operators in about 50 locations in Virginia and North Carolina will carry out a simulated emergency test from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday testing their ability to provide communications when more standard channels become inoperable.

A series of simulated weather advisories will be transmitted tonight from the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg over Skywarn Amateur Radio repeaters in the two states describing a major ice storm such as the ones experienced in the region during the mid-1990s. Interstate ham radio repeaters will report simulated weather, road and power conditions to the office, as well as mock reports of 35,000 vehicles and 70,000 interstate travelers being stranded."

Macomb Journal-Macomb, Illinois - News:

"Amateur radio operator tracks signal to find payload
By Chuck Gysi/Editor
Published: Thursday, December 7, 2006 10:33 AM CST

Students at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan., and amateur radio operators prepare a high-altitude balloon and its payload before launch on Saturday. The balloon landed in a field near Blandinsville more than four hours later.

BLANDINSVILLE - A high-altitude balloon launched by Kansas college students was tracked to have ended its almost 400-mile flight in a field near Blandinsville, thanks to amateur radio."

The experiment by the Kansas Wesleyan University Physics Club was launched at about 8 a.m. Saturday with some help from the Salina Ham Radio Club from the school's football field in Salina, Kan. The radio club added a payload to the balloon that transmitted the balloon's location via ham radio.

RCEMHS recently acquired a Mobile Incident Command Post for use during Emergencies, Drills and Events. The base vehicle was built by Moex Expandables and used as a mobile clinic and was converted into the MICP by a local Fire Department. In the summer of 2006 RCEMHS acquired this vehicle with the assistance of grant money and began the process of doing the necessary repairs and instillation of equipment to make this vehicle fit our needs.

The Times Leader Online - Princeton, Kentucky

The Times Leader Online - Princeton, Kentucky:

"Ham radio club to aid in emergencies

Times Leader Staff Report staff@timesleader.net
Wednesday, December 06, 2006

Amateur radio enthusiasts in Princeton and Caldwell County will share their knowledge with those interested in the pursuit this Saturday, with a day-long workshop concluding with a test to allow basic certification as an operator.

The workshop is part of an effort to foster more interest in ham radio operation, as its role in the county’s communication infrastructure continues to gain importance.
The Princeton Ham Radio Club (formerly the Princeton Amateur Radio Society) is now taking steps to establish that role, as a means of communication when all other communication fails. "

"We have liftoff - Discovery on the way

And a total of FOUR amateur Radio Satellites on their way to orbit:

ANDE MAA - packet digipeater and packet-to-voice
RAFT - packet digipeater and packet-to-voice
NMARS - Navy Marincorps Mars packet and Voice repeater
FCAL - Cubesat telemetry system

We call NMARS an amateur satellite too because it is operated by Amateur Radio Volulnteers in the Military Affiliate Radio System. It is on MARS frequency and only authorized MARS operators can use it, but they are all duly licensed radio amateurs too."

heraldsun.com: Amateur radio prepared for crises: "Amateur radio prepared for crises

BY GINNY HOYLE : The Herald-Sun
chh@heraldsun.com
Dec 10, 2006 : 9:26 pm ET

HILLSBOROUGH -- The year was 1963. Twelve-year-old Stanley 'Skip' Fisher was listening to a citizens band radio in his bedroom when he heard a call for help come across the airwaves from a baseball game in Oak Bluffs, Mass.

A young boy was injured and needed to be transported to the hospital. Fisher's call to the police that day helped save a boy's leg -- the launching point of his lifelong interest in helping others through technology.

Today, Fisher and other members of the all-volunteer Orange County Radio Amateurs help protect residents by providing emergency radio communications. "
