"HURRICANE WASTE
Wednesday, July 19, 2006

In the wake of another natural disaster, Homeland Security agents are accused of having used their government cash cards issued after Hurricane Katrina to buy items like iPods and beer.

According to a report due out later today, the government wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars on items like designer jackets and dog booties. The report also says the department is missing more than 100 laptop computers, 12 boats, and several GPS units bought in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. So far 70 employees have been disciplined."

"Hurricane Center Issues Tropical Storm Watch for Massachusetts
July 19 (Bloomberg) -- The National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm watch for parts of southeastern Massachusetts, including the vacation spots of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island, as Tropical Storm Beryl moves north.
``It's going to probably come close enough that there's certainly the possibility of tropical storm conditions,'' James Franklin, senior hurricane specialist at the Miami-based National Hurricane Center, said in an interview. ``That's all a watch means, that there's a possibility. It's going to be a close enough call that the watch is prudent.''
Beryl, the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, was centered about 135 miles (220 kilometers) northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and 390 miles south-southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts, as of 5 p.m. Miami time, the hurricane center said in a statement. It had sustained winds of 60 miles per hour (95 kilometers per hour). "

Weathering the storm tips for preparing boats, yachts for hurricane season

"Weathering the storm tips for preparing boats, yachts for hurricane season

CLEARWATER - Hurricane season is here and coastal residents are busy preparing their homes and property to weather any storms which come their way.
Because they're often already on the water, boats and yachts can be especially vulnerable to storm and hurricane damage - if they aren't properly prepared. MarineMax, the nation's largest boating and yachting retailer, has tips for boat owners to help protect boats and yachts from excessive damage during hurricanes and other storms.
'We take hurricane preparation very seriously,' says Glen Sandridge, Vice President at MarineMax. 'Hurricanes can be exceptionally destructive, but luckily boats, by design, are capable of withstanding the harshest of conditions. However, boat owners still need to be cautious and take steps to prevent damage during hurricanes.' "

Bogalusa Daily News Online

Bogalusa Daily News Online: "To the Editor:

There are numerous unknown heroes that have stepped up to the plate to assist communities during and after the recent hurricane Katrina emergency. The radio operators assist in communications when other methods of communications fail.
I am talking about the Amateur Radio Operators who assisted the various agencies such the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Local Authories such as the Fire, Police and Local Emergency Preparedness Agencies."
