UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Montenegro on Wednesday became the 192nd member of the United Nations, a month after it ended its 88-year partnership with Serbia that completed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.

'I declare the Republic of Montenegro admitted to membership in the United Nations,' U.N. General Assembly President Jan Eliasson announced after calling for approval by acclamation in the 191-nation body.

General Assembly members then broke into applause as the Balkan country's president, Filip Vujanovic, Foreign Minister Miodrag Vlahovic and U.N. envoy Nebojsa Kaludjerovic were escorted to their new seats, next to the Mongolian delegation.

'I am confident that Montenegro will strive for good neighborly relations and strong regional cooperation in the western Balkans, thus promoting stability in an area struck by conflict in the recent past,' Eliasson said."

NEW COUNTRY

"UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -

Montenegro on Wednesday became the 192nd member of the United Nations, a month after it ended its 88-year partnership with Serbia that completed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia.

The U.N. General Assembly of 191 nations admitted the small Balkan country of 650,000 people to the world body. It approved by acclamation a resolution introduced by Austria's U.N. ambassador, Gerhard Pfanzelter, whose country currently heads the European Union.

Montenegro declared independence from Serbia, a country of 7.5 million people, after a referendum passed by a slim margin on May 21.

It declared independence on June 3.

The U.N. seat previously assigned to Serbia and Montenegro is now in Serbia's hands. The last country to join the United Nations was East Timor in September 2002."

"Hamming it up in Palo Alto, amateur radio-style

Amateur radio operator Leigh Klotz Jr. of Palo Alto spent two hours on Sunday near the flagpole at Palo Verde School, sending Morse code to different locations throughout the United States.

He was one of many ham operators taking part in the 2006 American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Field Day held in late June each year.

Klotz also spent eight hours on Saturday and logged 25 contacts. The purpose of ARRL Field Day 2006 is to work as many stations as possible on amateur radio (ham) bands, both a competition and drill for potential emergencies. The organization's motto is,

'When all else fails.'

ARCPC FIELD DAY

ARCPC FIELD DAY

Each year in June ARCPC club members set up W5PC to participate in the annual ARRL Field Day.

This year we operated from Cartwright Park and our transmitter class was 2A NTX section. Fun was had by all and several local area hams where there for their first Field Day. Many thanks go to Bob Gill K5BG and Al Warren KD5TCP for the super job they did in co-chairing this event.

A special thanks goes to Bob who is no newcomer to Field Day and his efforts once again made this a very successful event.

Thanks to all that provided equipment for the event.

A big thank you to all the operators that participated again this year.

Without you, there would be no Field Day.

A special thanks go to Jerry W7JT and Beth K5BLT for their FB work providing and cooking the food.

Thanks to all who helped setup and take down all the antennas and equipment. Your help was much appreciated.

The final QSO count is 842 CW contacts and 351 Phone contacts.

KHAS-TV - News - Top Local Stories - Amateur radio operators showcase skills

"Amateur radio operators showcase skills
By David Ernst

Local amateur radio operators showed off their skills today at the Hastings Amateur Radio Club's annual field day.

The club came together and set up their gear to contact as many other radio operators as they could in 24 hours.

Ham radio operators can be a crucial communication link when disaster strikes.

One of the reasons that ham radio operators are valuable in an emergency is their equipment is not affected if power lines go down. It is portable communications that can assist during an emergency and aren't necessarily affected like the phone lines and such, said president Pete McConnell.

There is more than 670,000 ham radio operators in the U.S. and more than 2.5 million around the world.

The club is always looking for new members and their dues are $20 to $30 dollars a year. "
