For a 24-hour period, amateur radio operators from around Southwest Florida will attempt to contact people all over the world.

The American Relay Radio Leagues Field Day, which has been held at Veterans Park in Lehigh Acres since 2000, is a chance for ham radio enthusiasts to have some fun while training for disasters.

During hurricanes when all other communications fail, ham radio operators are still on the air, said Earl Spencer, 80, a member of the radio league. It is the most dependent means of communication you can have.

Spencer, of Fort Myers, has been operating his radio for 45 years and said the more practice hams get, the better off theyll be in a disaster.

The basis for ham radio is practice; we need to be ready to assist in storms, Spencer said. To do the job effectively, you have to know it well, and this event gives everyone practice."

Radio buffs of the Sterling Park Amateur Radio Club are getting ready for their annual Radio Relay League Field Day June 24 and 25 at Park View High School.

Field Day tests a club's readiness to serve in an emergency - when the power's out, the microwave relays are down and cell phones are mute. The hams set up in a field, string antennas and use a generator for power.

Then they camp out all night and talk to other radio enthusiasts from around the world. They also invite the community to come by and join them, and anyone can try his or her hand at the GOTO station (that's the easy one, for beginners) and talk to someone on the other side of the globe.

They'll be on the air for 24 hours straight, early afternoon Saturday through the same mark on the clock Sunday, running voice and digital stations, competing with radio clubs all over North America for the most contacts.
For details, or to learn about the club's courses in Morse code and radio skills, call Jim Chapell, 703-437-6379. If you're already on the air, he's at AF4MO. "
