"NEWS RELEASE FROM OFFICE OF JEFFERSON COUNTY JUDGE CARL GRIFFITH

Southeast Texas officials have learned late Tuesday evening that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison has secured additional hurricane relief funds for Texas Hurricane Rita response.

Sen. Hutchison, who serves on the conference committee working to reconcile differences in the House and Senate version of the relief bills, notified Jefferson County Judge Carl Griffith by phone at his residence within the last hour that she was able to push through a 90 percent federal share for Texas relief funds. Officials statewide earlier had reeled from the news that Texas would get a 75-25 federal-state share on Rita relief funds, while Louisiana would get a 90-10 split.

According to Judge Griffith, the additional funding, which also received strong support from Sen. John Cornyn, Reps. Ted Poe and Kevin Brady, as well as the rest of the Texas delegation, could mean up to $200 million in federal funds for Texas.
More details on the additional funding will be released in the near future. "

TownOnline.com - Local News: Weymouth gearing up for hurricane season

"Weymouth gearing up for hurricane season
By Ed Baker/ ebaker@cnc.com
Wednesday, June 7, 2006

Along with other local and state officials, the Weymouth Civil Defense department is gearing up for hurricane season, which began last week.

Weymouth officials joined numerous southeastern Massachusetts emergency directors and staffs, including amateur radio operators, in a hurricane readiness drill at Braintree Town Hall on Monday.

The exercise, entitled 'Hurricane Hope,' involved all phases of emergency management, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, and communications.

'It's a communication drill,' Weymouth Civil Defense Director John Mulveyhill said prior to the training exercise. 'We will be given scenarios where we will have to give situation reports and to have to report on we will respond to it.'

Mulveyhill said some of the mock emergencies of previous drills included a massive power outage in Braintree and Weymouth and a ship striking the Fore River Bridge."

Hurricane Hunters Take on 2006 Season

Hurricane Hunters Take on 2006 Season: "Hurricane Hunters Take on 2006 Season
Air Force Print News | James B. Pritchett | June 05, 2006
Keeler AFB, MS. - It was a quiet opening day of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season. Hurricane Hunters of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron spent the day training and getting ready for what forecasters say will be another active season.

Though the season officially began June 1 and ends Nov. 30, last year these reservists flew more than 1,500 hours into storms beginning in May with Hurricane Adrian in the Pacific and finally ending in December flying missions into Hurricane Epsilon.

Tropical Storm Zeta formed later, extending the 2005 season into 2006 though it did not threaten landfall. "

Hurricane season brings urgency to fixing FEMA

Hurricane season brings urgency to fixing FEMA: "Hurricane season brings urgency to fixing FEMA
By Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.)

When Max Mayfield of the National Hurricane Center talks, the people in my district listen.
Mayfield has predicted another volatile year, with this hurricane season delivering up to eight to 10 hurricanes, according to the latest predictions of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
While we prepare for the season, which began Wednesday, structural problems remain that plague the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the federal agency that delivers aid in the wake of a hurricane and ensures localities are prepared with disaster plans.
There is no doubt in my mind that FEMAs response to the storms of the past two years was hampered greatly and will continue to be hampered for the coming hurricane season by the top-heavy government bureaucracy of the Department of Homeland Security."
