ARRLWeb: ARRL Experimenting with Icom D-Star Digital System

ARRLWeb: ARRL Experimenting with Icom D-Star Digital System

"NEWINGTON, CT, Dec 14, 2005--

Thanks to the generosity of Icom, MFJ and NCG (Comet), the ARRL has embarked on a project to learn firsthand what D-Star digital technology has to offer and to assess its capabilities in a real-world Amateur Radio environment.

Icom, so far the only ham radio manufacturer offering D-Star equipment, has donated a D-Star voice repeater (model ID-RP2V), data repeater (model ID-RP2D) and controller (model ID-RP2C) to W1AW.

Eight model ID-1 D-Star 10 W mobile transceivers are on loan from the manufacturer.

'We appreciate Icom's cooperation and support as we explore D-Star's capabilities and learn more about digital radio systems,' ARRL CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ, said in expressing the League's gratitude. "

It's A Convoy! 2005 Holiday Toy Drive Trucks Hit the Highway:

A convoy carrying contributions to the ARRL/Salvation Army Holiday Toy Drive set off December 15 from the Memphis warehouse where the toys have been collecting for several weeks.

Seeing them off were representatives of the ARRL and The Salvation Army, country music singer Patty Loveless, KD4WUJ, Amateur Radio volunteers, the news media, dignitaries and, of course, Santa Claus.

Loveless, who served as national chairperson for the campaign, expressed her thanks to Amateur Radio clubs and individual hams who gave to the drive.

'I think it's just amazing! For those who couldn't be here, I'm sure they're here in spirit and giving from their hearts, and I just want to thank them--from all around--for collecting,' Loveless told ARRL. 'Love is a word that truly everybody knows.' "

The Sheboygan Press - Neighbor Worth Knowing Sheboygan native likes to 'ham it up' on the radio

"Neighbor Worth Knowing Sheboygan native likes to 'ham it up' on the radio
By Belia Ortega
Sheboygan Press staff
'W9SDH...CQ.'
Translation: 'Wally Shellingosky, anybody listening?'

Wally Shellingosky, amateur radio operator, gets on the airwaves every afternoon to 'ham it up' with other operators in the Midwest.

The 87-year-old Sheboygan native looks forward to his noon gossip session, where topics include the weather and gas prices, as one of four antennas on the roof of his Lakeshore Drive home transmits his conversations.

Sitting in front of the transmitter, receiver, microphone and scanner he has set up in his dining room, Shellingosky reminisces about when he first began his hobby about 70 years ago.

'The first radio I had I built myself (in 1939),' he said. 'It's a very interesting hobby, and at my advanced age I don't know what I would do if I didn't have my radio to talk to others.'

The Sheboygan County Amateur Radio Club recently awarded him a lifetime achievement award for his public service.

'He's helped so many people that everybody felt so strongly about it,' said Neil Wolf, 63, president of the radio club. 'He's helped people get their radio license and explained (radio) techniques to them.'

Before cell phones were easily accessible, Shellingosky was one of the radio club members who would volunteer his time to help during local racing events by tracking racers, communicating with the National Weather Service in Sullivan during hazardous and extreme weather conditions and assisting service people locally and overseas.

KB5AVY Named Winner of 3rd Annual Lynch Award

(TOKYO) _ Roberto Dabdoub, M.D., KB5AVY, today was named the recipient of the W. Sandy Lynch Memorial Award, given annually by the Tokyo International Amateur Radio Association (TIARA).
For 20 years, Dr. Dabdoub, a General Class ham struggled to keep four reporters on the air in the New Orleans area with little assistance from other users.

The Honduran native, who moved to the United States 45 years ago, saw his two decades of toiling pay off when one of his repeaters became the only machine to remain working in the metro area following Hurricane Katrina.

His system was the only link, for a critical period, among the Baton Rouge emergency center, and other relief and emergency centers involved in critical rescue work. Roberto's repeater did not lose power because its QTH at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation had its own auxiliary power plant. "

ARES Emergency Net Established After Missouri Dam Break:
When millions of gallons of water breached the wall of a mountaintop hydroelectric reservoir in rural Reynolds County, Missouri, December 14, an ARES emergency net was quickly established on the Van Buren repeater. The deluge washed down the mountainside, sweeping away homes and vehicles and flooding the valley below.

A dwelling occupied by a park superintendent, his wife and three children was among those washed away. The family was found a half-mile away, and the children all were hospitalized, at least one of them in serious condition. The town of Lesterville was under a voluntary evacuation order. "

Answering Afghanistan's call - The Boston Globe

Answering Afghanistan's call - The Boston Globe

"Answering Afghanistan's call
Architect returns to country he fled
By Susan Chaityn Lebovits Susan Chaityn Lebovits

The gunshots rang out decades ago and far away from his new home in Waltham, but Najim Azadzoi still remembers them vividly.

The year was 1978. Azadzoi had gone to bed the night before anticipating another day of teaching architecture at the University of Kabul.

''My first memory is suddenly you wake up and hear gunshots in the streets,' he recalled, adding that he then turned on the radio, but heard nothing but static. All the stations were off the air.
''People were in the streets wondering what had happened the night before,' he said. ''Then we saw tanks rolling and soldiers marching.'

By the time Azadzoi walked to the university, the radio was back on, announcing that the communists had killed the president and his family, and had taken over the country."

NEWPORT - When the National Weather Service opened its office in Newport 12 years ago, head meteorologist Tom Kriehn was quick to get to know the area's amateur radio operators.

Kriehn knew they would be a valuable asset in providing severe weather information from the field.
'They have a long history around the country of working with the National Weather Service,' he said."

"2-Gbps security accelerator card
protects high-speed networks

Single-card solution provides up to 50X the threat-detection throughput of software solutions
Addressing the need for faster communications security that can handle more complex threats, the PCI 64/66-based C-2000 Ultra content security accelerator card is said to be the first single-card solution with 2-Gbit/s performance.

The card provides 30X to 50X the antispam, antispyware, and intrusion-detection throughput of software-only methods, which are not able to keep up with ever speedier corporate networks."

First Polish ham radio DX contact - SPTPAX

First Polish ham radio DX contact - SP0TPAX

"First Polish ham radio DX contact - SP0TPAX

Look for special event station SP0TPAX to be active in December and then again in April.

The activity is organized by the SP DX Club. Expect activity on all bands (LF, HF, VHF, UHF) on all possible modes. QSL via SP7DQR (by the bureau or direct).

This activity is to celebrate the first Polish amateur radio contact to a ham radio station from outside Poland in 1925. Tadeusz Heftman, using the call SP0TPAX, made a QSO with N0PM - it was a station from the Netherlands.

A few months later, in April 1925, TPAX made a QSO with an American HAM who was using U1AAO as a callsign.

Please note: Tom, SP5UAF, is looking for any ham who may possibly have any information about these two historical callsigns - N0PM or U1AAO.

Contact Tom, SP5UAF, at: tomek@sp5zcc.waw.pl"

"Dispute Erupts at FCC Over CALEA Rules

A battle at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is brewing over the regulators August order that Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and broadband access service providers comply with wiretaps and accommodate other official measures covered by the often-controversial Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) of 1994 (Telecom Policy Report, Aug. 8).

A petition to hold up implementing the FCCs CALEA-related order much to the chagrin of the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and associated agencies was filed late Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving; this would have required DoJ to reply by Nov. 30, but it made a successful plea because of the holiday weekend challenge to delay its response. However, that response was not on the FCC record as of press time today.

The request for a stay was filed by attorneys representing a somewhat eclectic group of 10 organizations: the Center for Democracy & Technology, the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research Libraries, the Association of Research Libraries, the Association For Community Networking, the Champaign Urbana Community Wireless Network, the Texas Internet Service Providers Association, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and pulver.com."

EETimes.com - WiQuest rolls gigabit chip support for ultrawideband

EETimes.com - WiQuest rolls gigabit chip support for ultrawideband

"WiQuest rolls gigabit chip support for ultrawideband
Patrick Mannion
EE Times
Manhasset, N.Y.

Firm in the belief that 2006 will be the year ultrawideband finally takes off, WiQuest Communications Inc. will unveil a WiMedia compliant 1-Gbit/second chip set this week that it expects will open up applications from simple cable replacement to streaming video. Armed with a complete solution from the antenna through full media-access control WiQuest is looking to grab its share of a total available market that analysts predict will reach $2.4 billion by 2009.

Many of the application areas the company is pursuing are already addressed by wireless LANs and Bluetooth. But WiQuest is 'not looking to displace those technologies,' said Matthew Shoemake, founder, president and chief executive officer at WiQuest (Allen, Texas). 'Instead, we're about enabling new applications' through high data rates and low power.

The apps will include PC and consumer devices in 2006, 'but mobile [handset] applications will lag a bit . . . probably into 2007,' Shoemake said."

13WHAM-TV || Rochester - Thousands of fans bid Stern farewell

"Thousands of fans bid Stern farewell

NEW YORK (AP) - Howard Stern fans have gathered for a big goodbye.

Thousands of people stood in a steady drizzle in midtown Manhattan -- many holding signs -- as the popular radio host wrapped up his final show on 'terrestrial' radio.

Among them were Stern regulars 'Jeff the Drunk' and 'Beetlejuice,' who led a singalong. Many of the signs praised Stern and attacked the Federal Communications Commission.

Stern is leaving his syndicated show for satellite radio in January. He has a five-year, 500 million-dollar contract with Sirius to create two new channels for the company.

Stern's show has been the center of attention in First Amendment issues and censorship. Infinity Broadcasting has paid millions of dollars to settle FCC complaints against Stern.
