"Indiana Tornado 'Like a Thief in the Night,'
Ham Radio Volunteer Says

NEWINGTON, CT, Nov 11, 2005--

Amateur Radio volunteers continue to assist relief and recovery efforts in the wake of a November 6 tornado that left 22 people dead and hundreds injured.

The twister, an F3 on the Fujita scale with winds of up to 200 MPH, originated within a line of thunderstorms that struck the region during the early morning hours.

It cut a more than 40-mile swath through part of Kentucky and extreme southwestern Indiana, wiping out a section of a trailer park in Vanderburgh County where 18 of the fatalities occurred. "

Ralph Ofchinick Jr. sat at his desk in his Harrison City home, seeking contact with other 'on the air' ham radio operators.

A volunteer named Joe was manning the East Coast Amateur Radio Service that morning. ECARS volunteers, Ofchinick said, do everything from chat with folks looking for a little conversation to call for roadside assistance for mobile users.

'Sounds like you're on the Schuylkill Expressway,' Joe told one motorist, who confirmed that he was on the Philadelphia-area roadway.

Another operator checked in from Nashua, N.H., where he said it was 38 degrees. "

Riding the sine wave - Sending data over power lines is not a new concept.

Riding the sine wave Sending data over power lines is not a new concept.

"Others weren't quite so taken with the news.

Manassas citizen, engineer, and ham (amateur-radio) enthusiast George Tarnovsky stated, 'This entire BPL system is a failure.' Tarnovsky's point focused not only on emissions from the BPL system that interfere with ham operations, but also on interference from hams and other sources to the BPL system. He continued, 'They have no ingress protection.'

Sending data over power lines is not a new concept.

The HPA (HomePlug Powerline Alliance) has for years touted power-line-based home networking, and HomePlug 1.0 products from multiple vendors offer 14-Mbps maximum data rates although actual data rates are in the 5- to 6-Mbps range. New HomePlug 1.0 Turbo products are just emerging that extend the maximum speed to 85 Mbps.

Meanwhile, the group is working on a new specification, HomePlug AV, which will focus on moving video around a home and offer 200-Mbps rates. That specification is complete, and chip samples that support HomePlug AV are due late this year."

By LARRY AMBUEL
Special to Florida Baptist Witness
Published November 10, 2005

Most Southern Baptists know about our Florida Baptist Conventions superb efforts and accomplishments in the area of Disaster Relief.

And, most are familiar with what might be characterized as our major area of concentration--that is our ability to cook and prepare for the distribution of thousands of meals per day. If youve ever seen it, you would agree that the entire effort is quite impressive.

From the huge trucks containing the cooking equipment, including the clean up steam jennys, to the people who prepare and distribute the meals, the whole operation is awesome.

Although many of us who have participated in Disaster Relief kid from time to time about the food (oh no! not chicken and dumplings again), we are always glad when its time to eat."

'Broadband over Power Lines Set to Electrify the Internet Access Market'

Says visiongain

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. & LONDON --(Business Wire)-- Nov. 10, 2005 -- Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) is emerging as a new challenger to the dominance of DSL and cable for broadband internet access. BPL has been in development for the past ten years and is now starting to gain global market traction.

That is the finding from a new study, 'Broadband over Power Lines: Challenging existing broadband dynamics', published by industry research company, visiongain.
Also known as the 'third wire' for delivering broadband communications to users, more than 100 trials in 40 different countries worldwide since 2001 have confirmed the viability of BPL technology. The main commercial BPL networks in the EU are found in Germany, Australia and Spain.

There are also numerous trials and pilot projects currently underway in the US, where at least 10,000 users subscribe to commercial services. "

Indiana Section Emergency Coordinator David Pifer, N9YNF, reports Amateur Radio volunteers are assisting relief operations in the wake of a November 6 tornado that left 22 people dead and 200 injured. The twister slashed a more than 40-mile swath through part of Kentucky and extreme southwestern Indiana in the early morning hours, wiping out a section of a trailer park in Vanderburgh County where 18 of the fatalities occurred.

'Amateur radio has been involved with various aspects of the response from the beginning,' Pifer said. The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross are on the scene in the affected areas with canteen and mass-care facilities to feed and care for relief workers and tornado victims. "

So you think the ARRL is making great strides with the FCC in dealing with the interference issues caused by Broadband over Power Lines? Maybe the ARRL is focusing on the wrong government agency.

I ran across this Power Point presentation on the National Telecommunications and Information Agency's (NTIA) website. It is a presentation given by Assistant Secretary Michael Gallagher discussing Promoting Broadband Deployment Across America at the Western Telecommunications Alliance 2005 Annual Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, on November 7, 2005.

Today is November 9, 2005. As of two days ago, it does not appear as if BPL even has a bad cough much less is in danger of dying any time soon!

Link to the NTIA presentation: "

NEWINGTON, CT, Nov 9, 2005--Well in advance of the 55th Dayton Hamvention next spring, event organizers report they're implementing strategies to improve communication and provide more and better information about the show. Part of the plan is a complete makeover of the Dayton Hamvention Web site, still a work in progress. Hamvention 2006 takes place May 19-21 at Hara Arena in Trotwood, Ohio. Dayton Hamvention volunteers this past spring asked many vendors and visitors alike what they could do to improve the world's largest Amateur Radio gathering, and 'better communication' was the most common response.
