Tsunami Hit Hardest in Areas East, West of Quake Epicenter

"Last month's disparities started when a plate of Earth's crust slipped abruptly beneath an adjoining slab of rock under the seas just west of Sumatra. Unlike an asteroid impact, which would send out concentric circles of energy in all directions equally, this geologic event was primarily a sideways motion. That meant that from the start, the waves it sent east and west carried much more energy than those headed north or south, said Steven Ward, a geophysicist at the University of California at Santa Cruz, who has generated a detailed computer model of the tsunami's progression (visible at www.es.ucsc.edu/~ward/indo.mov). Sri Lanka, a New Wave Of Pain (washingtonpost.com)

"In Sri Lanka, a New Wave Of Pain
Doctor Tries to Ease Mental Devastation
By Neely Tucker
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 7, 2005; Page A01

BATTICALOA, Sri Lanka -- Ganesan is a rare man in Sri Lanka.
He is a father, husband, and the only psychiatrist for 1.3 million of the world's most traumatized people. His roving practice along this island nation's eastern shore stretches over 150 miles, all of it devastated by last week's tsunami.

Even before the tidal wave, when his clients were one of the world's most suicide-prone populations, his practice was filled with paranoid schizophrenics, manic-depressives, rape victims and thousands of torture victims from the civil war (one subset of patients: people with pencils jammed in both ears simultaneously)."

"Race to Bring Tsunami Aid to Aceh Survivors

By Dan Eaton and Achmad Sukarsono

Indonesia - BANDA ACEH, - Reuters -

The world's largest peace-time relief effort zeroed in on remote northern areas of Indonesia's Sumatra island where possibly hundreds of thousands of tsunami survivors have yet to receive aid.
As many as a million people may have lived in the area before it was struck by the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami, U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland said.

But cut off by roads and communications, many survivors are thought to have taken shelter in the heavily forested interior, he told reporters, and the true scope of the disaster was yet to be revealed."

The U.S. servicemen have been logging 24-hour shifts in sweltering humidity, but their voices bubble with enthusiasm as they describe the welcome they've received in the most conservative Islamic province of this Muslim country."

"We get lots of smiles, lots of thumbs-up," says Chief Petty Officer Matthew Schwantz, 29, of Beaufort, S.C. He's part of a squadron that has been flying off the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to bring aid to victims of the tsunami that struck Dec. 26. "The people are very appreciative."
