Firm in the belief that 2006 will be the year ultrawideband finally takes off, WiQuest Communications Inc. will unveil a WiMedia compliant 1-Gbit/second chip set this week that it expects will open up applications from simple cable replacement to streaming video. Armed with a complete solution from the antenna through full media-access control WiQuest is looking to grab its share of a total available market that analysts predict will reach $2.4 billion by 2009.
Many of the application areas the company is pursuing are already addressed by wireless LANs and Bluetooth. But WiQuest is 'not looking to displace those technologies,' said Matthew Shoemake, founder, president and chief executive officer at WiQuest (Allen, Texas). 'Instead, we're about enabling new applications' through high data rates and low power.
The apps will include PC and consumer devices in 2006, 'but mobile [handset] applications will lag a bit . . . probably into 2007,' Shoemake said."

Code may be taking a back seat for now,
but the pioneering spirit that put the code
there in the first place is out front of it all.
