"FALLBROOK
At the weekly meeting of his amateur radio club, Phil Leonelli held up a receiver.
'Guess how much this cost me?'
Instructior Phil Leonelli worked with students Nicole Baker (left), who was logged onto the amateur radio station's Web site, and Zachary Robinson (right) who was sending out a call to other station operators.
He paused for effect. 'Two dollars.'
'Garage sales are a great place to find equipment without having to spend a lot of money,' Leonelli said. 'You can listen to stations worldwide with this.'
He then shared another find: a junior electronic kit he found for 25 cents.
For nearly an hour, the Iowa Street School teacher held the undivided attention of his audience, a small group of children from kindergarten to eighth grade.
As he threw out questions about costs,
equipment and licensing requirements,
hands shot up immediately. "

Code may be taking a back seat for now,
but the pioneering spirit that put the code
there in the first place is out front of it all.
