FMQB: Radio Industry News, Music Industry Updates, Arbitron Ratings, Music News and more!: "Bush Nominates Tate For FCC Slot
November 10, 2005
As reported yesterday, President Bush has nominated Deborah Tate and re-nominated Michael Copps to the FCC. Tate's name has been circulating in the rumor mill for the position since July.
Since the departure of Chairman Michael Powell, the FCC Commissioners have been split evenly with two Republicans and two Democrats filling the seats. Adding Republican Tate would temporarily make that count 3-2 for Republicans, but the balance of power will be equalized again later this year when Republican Commissioner Kathleen Abernathy steps down. Her term has technically expired, but she can serve until Congress adjourns this year.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has issued a statement supporting Bush's nominations.
He said, 'If confirmed, Debi Tate will be an excellent addition to the Commission.
She has a distinguished career in state government, and she has worked closely with the Commission in her role as Director of the Tennessee Regulatory Authority. Also, if confirmed, I look forward to continuing to work closely with Commissioner Copps. He has served admirably at the Commission for the past four years, and I respect his insight and thoughtfulness on issues before the Commission. I welcome both Debi and Michael, and I appreciate their continued dedication to public service.'"

Code may be taking a back seat for now,
but the pioneering spirit that put the code
there in the first place is out front of it all.
