Ralph Ofchinick Jr. sat at his desk in his Harrison City home, seeking contact with other 'on the air' ham radio operators.

A volunteer named Joe was manning the East Coast Amateur Radio Service that morning. ECARS volunteers, Ofchinick said, do everything from chat with folks looking for a little conversation to call for roadside assistance for mobile users.

'Sounds like you're on the Schuylkill Expressway,' Joe told one motorist, who confirmed that he was on the Philadelphia-area roadway.

Another operator checked in from Nashua, N.H., where he said it was 38 degrees. "
