Curse of the Narrows:
The Halifax Explosion 1917
By Laura M. Mac Donald
On Thursday, Dec. 6, 1917, editors at the American Red Cross were correcting the proofs of a small handbook, entitled Disasters.
The Red Cross realized that it needed such a booklet, explaining the principles of disaster relief, after it had found itself totally unprepared in April, 1906, to manage the fallout of the San Francisco earthquake. Just as Disasters was going to press, the Red Cross heard about the Halifax explosion, the largest man-made disaster in history.
Within 12 hours of hearing the ghastly news, a Boston & Maine train filled with American Red Cross disaster relief experts, medical professionals and supplies pulled out of Boston Station and headed north."
