"A week ago, the center responded to a Texas caller whose parents were trapped on the roof of a collapsing house in Bay St. Louis, Miss., with two neighbors. The Minot volunteer called emergency services in Mississippi, only to get a busy signal.

The local ham radio club, set up in the basement of the Red Cross building, relayed a message to the Coast Guard after the call-center volunteer gathered as much information about location as possible from the caller.

About 45 minutes later, the ham radio club learned that the Coast Guard picked up the four people.
Also in the past week, the call center was able to coordinate a rescue for about 20 nursing-home residents, McGeough said."
