Guardian Unlimited | World Latest | Vignettes From the Aftermath of Katrina

"TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -
Amateur radio is filling the silence left when Hurricane Katrina felled cell towers and scrambled telephone land lines along the Gulf coast.
The Tampa Amateur Radio Club has relayed about 100 messages from amateur radio operators and evacuees in Biloxi, Miss., to their loved ones nationwide.
The 83-year-old club has been broadcasting daily since Thursday, when several members took radio equipment to hurricane-devastated regions.
Most of the messages simply state, ``I'm OK.'' Others have sought confirmation about a relative's death.
One message from a Biloxi evacuee to her sister in northern California gave a list of items to send: ``We need clothes, toiletries, gas, money, even a motor home if you can swing it. Lost all homes. Love you.'' "
