"County social workers and health department nurses and trained American Red Cross volunteers were manning the shelters. Brunswick County Sheriff's deputies are providing security. A ham radio operator is also stationed at the shelters.

According to Red Cross volunteer Bob Bobinski at West Brunswick High School, the school cafeteria has room for 825 evacuees, plenty of water on hand, a 24-hour back-up generator and sewer service. Evacuees are fed three meals a day in the school cafeteria.

Separate rooms have been designated for senior citizens, the volunteers said. Evacuees are asked to bring blankets and/or sleeping bags because they will be sleeping on the floor, any special foods and all necessary medicines.

'We're using classrooms for sleeping, and as the population grows, we'll be expanding to the halls and the gym floor,' Bobinski said.

Eighteen people spent Monday night at West Brunswick, he said.

Code may be taking a back seat for now,
but the pioneering spirit that put the code
there in the first place is out front of it all.

According to the county, 22 people spent the night at South Brunswick, while four or five were at North Brunswick on Tuesday morning."
